Application

The Model 6020 is intended for use wherever there Is a requirement for measuring either acceleration or angle of tilt from the vertical. Acceleration along the sensitive axis of the device generates an output voltage which varies linearly with the acceleration. Tilt produces a voltage which is proportional to the sine of the tilt angle. tilt or acceleration perpendicular to the sensitive ax Is produces no output signal.     A complete accelerometer system, or a sensitive electronic "level", can be made by simply connecting the 6020 to a power supply and reading the output with a general-purpose multlmeter.

Principle of Operation

The Model 6020 operates on the so-called force-balance principle of operation. The heart of the device is similar to a miniature moving-coilmeter movement with a small bob-weight attached to its pointer. Acceleration, or tilt, causes the pointer to deviate slightly from its rest position. This deviation is detected by an optical sensor the output signal, of which, after amplification, drives a current through the coil of the meter movement in a direction which restores the pointer to its rest position. This feedback system operates continuously so that the force on the bob-weight is always balanced by the current through the meter movement, hence the name force-balance. It remains only to feed the current into a buffer amplifier to generate the output signal.
